The urban dub-reggae and super sunny disposition of his debut album,
Maverick A Strike--which spawned five singles, including the ultra chilled "Even After All" and his calling card "Sunday Shining" and won him Best Male Solo Artist at the 1998 Brits--made Finley Quaye a house hold name. Due predominately to the fact that
Maverick was the perfect summer soundtrack, Finley's success also owes a part debt to the fact that he, his voice and his sound were, at the time, unique. Two years on and very little has changed. Finley still has no competition when it comes to spirit lifting dubpop and his new album has just as many effortlessly cool tunes as its predecessor. Most importantly, Finley still knows how to take the rootsiest grooves and organic beats and turn them into instantly memorable pop tunes. Be it single "Spiritualized", with that other classic Quaye trait, wacky lyrics; "Paint the wall/fix the plugs/gonna fill this room with Persian rugs" and a rock powered guitar groove or the Desmond Decker reggae sway of "Burning", everything on
Vanguard is topped with a contagious melody. Not a revelation, then, but a reassurance that
Maverick A Strike was no flash in the pan. If anything,
Vanguard is just that little bit sunnier.
